Defining Eczema

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that leads to dry, itchy, and scaly skin. It can impact both children and adults. Scratching often worsens the itching and may cause the skin to become thickened and discolored. While individuals with eczema may also have allergies or asthma, these are not direct causes of the condition. Many people outgrow eczema by adulthood; however, some continue to experience symptoms throughout their adult lives.

Causes of Eczema
  • Abnormal skin barrier making it more permeable than it should be
  • Genetic factors – People with a family history of eczema are at increased risk.
  • Environmental factors – Cold, dry air and contact with chemicals or irritants
Dermatological Solutions for Eczema

Proper skin care at home is essential and may help lessen the need for medical treatments. Recommended at-home care includes:

  • Using a gentle, fragrance-free soap
  • Applying thick moisturizers, such as fragrance-free creams and petroleum jelly
  • Taking lukewarm showers, patting the skin dry, and moisturizing immediately afterward; avoid long, hot showers
  • Refraining from scratching; keep nails trimmed short to reduce skin damage
  • Running a humidifier in the bedroom to combat dryness
  • Steering clear of irritants, such as strong fragrances, drying soaps, harsh detergents, and wool clothing
Eczema Management

For more severe eczema symptoms, a doctor may prescribe medical treatments that are aimed at calming the underlying inflammation. Treatment can include:

  • Topical corticosteroids
  • Topical calcineurin inhibitors
  • Antihistamines
  • Phototherapy

While there is no cure for eczema, the good news is that control is usually possible with treatment. If you are dealing with persistent or severe flare-ups, then it’s time to talk with a dermatologist about ways to better control your symptoms, including prescription level treatment.
