A board-certified dermatologist will recommend a biopsy or removal of a mole if there are indications of abnormality or skin cancer. However, Northstar Dermatology also specializes in the cosmetic removal of benign moles. Patients may request a cosmetic removal of a mole if they are unhappy with the appearance or location of the mole. To request a consult for a cosmetic mole removal, contact our specialists at Northstar Dermatology.
Cosmetic removal of smaller sized moles may be performed with a simple shave removal in our office. The area is numbed, and the specialist will use a thin blade to “shave” the mole from the surface of the skin. Our experts are trained in smooth technique for removal to ensure a nice cosmetic outcome and healing process. Note, all cosmetic mole removals have risk of “leftover” pigment in the base of the skin, reoccurrence, or scarring.
Larger sized moles, or moles that are very dark in pigment, may require an excision to remove completely. The area will be numbed, and the specialist will surgically remove the mole. The area will then be closed with a few top-layer sutures. Note, all cosmetic mole removals have risk of “leftover” pigment in the base of the skin, reoccurrence, or scarring.
A consultation will be required for all cosmetic mole removals to ensure the patient is a candidate for removal, and to discuss the benefits and potential risks of the procedure. Some moles that are very large in size may require removal by a plastic surgeon. Our teams’ goal is to recommend a solution for cosmetic mole removal that will be both aesthetically pleasing and effective.
