While epidermal cysts might not always be problematic, some cysts can cause significant discomfort or pain if they grow large in size or become inflamed. The specialists at Northstar Dermatology are experts at diagnosing and treating epidermal cysts. To evaluate a growing or bothersome cyst, contact our office today.
An epidermal cyst (sometimes called an epidermoid cyst) is essentially a “sack” filled with skin cells and keratin material (a soft yellow substance). Cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and typically start out as a small lump or nodule, but can grow to be quite large in size.
Cysts may be indicated for treatment or removal if they become inflamed, infected, or painful. Cysts may also be considered for removal if they become large in size and become disruptive to daily life or activities.
There are several different treatment options for cysts depending on the state of the cyst. Cysts that are infected or inflamed may be treated with antibiotics, steroid injections, or a procedure called an incision and drainage. Epidermal cysts may also be removed with a surgical excision. During excision, our boardcertified dermatologists will numb the area, make an incision, and work to remove the entire “sack” of the cyst. Removal of the cyst’s outer later is important to reduce the chances of regrowth or reoccurrence. The area will be closed with sutures and some downtime will be required for a couple of weeks (lifting and physical activity restrictions).
