Although epidermal cysts aren’t always problematic, some can cause considerable discomfort or pain if they enlarge or become inflamed. The specialists at Northstar Dermatology are skilled in diagnosing and treating epidermal cysts. If you have a growing or bothersome cyst, contact our office for an evaluation today.
An epidermal cyst, also known as an epidermoid cyst, is essentially a “sac” filled with skin cells and keratin material (a soft yellow substance). These cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and usually begin as a small lump or nodule, but they can grow quite large over time.
Treatment or removal of cysts may be recommended if they become inflamed, infected, or painful. Additionally, cysts may be considered for removal if they grow large enough to interfere with daily life or activities.
There are several treatment options for cysts depending on their condition. Cysts that are infected or inflamed may be managed with antibiotics, steroid injections, or a procedure called incision and drainage. Epidermal cysts can also be removed through surgical excision. During this procedure, our board-certified dermatologists will numb the area, make an incision, and carefully remove the entire “sac” of the cyst. Removing the cyst’s outer layer is crucial to reduce the likelihood of regrowth or recurrence. The area will be closed with sutures, and some downtime may be necessary, including lifting and physical activity restrictions for a few weeks.
