Although epidermal cysts may not always cause issues, some can lead to considerable discomfort or pain if they become enlarged or inflamed. The specialists at Northstar Dermatology are highly skilled in diagnosing and treating epidermal cysts. To have a growing or troublesome cyst evaluated, contact our office today.
An epidermal cyst, also known as an epidermoid cyst, is essentially a “sac” containing skin cells and keratin material, which is a soft, yellowish substance. These cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and generally begin as a small lump or nodule, though they can become quite large over time.
Cysts may require treatment or removal if they become inflamed, infected, or painful. Removal might also be necessary if a cyst grows large enough to interfere with daily life or activities.
Treatment options for cysts vary based on their condition. Infected or inflamed cysts can be treated with antibiotics, steroid injections, or an incision and drainage procedure. For epidermal cysts, surgical excision is also an option. During this method, our board-certified dermatologists will numb the area, make an incision, and take out the entire cyst “sac.” Removing this outer layer is essential to minimize the risk of regrowth or another occurrence. The area is then closed with sutures, and a few weeks of downtime (with restrictions on lifting and physical activity) may be necessary.
