Latisse is a brand name for bimatoprost, a prescription medication used to treat both glaucoma and to promote eyelash growth and thickening.
About Latisse
Latisse stimulates more eyelashes to grow and also causes lashes to grow longer and darker. Bimatoprost, the medication sold under the brand name, Latisse. The prescription eye solution has received FDA approval for the treatment of hypotrichosis, a condition that describes an inadequate amount of hair or eyelashes.
Latisse has been proven to increase the length and thickness of eyelashes, as well as to darken the color of the lashes. Talk to your dermatologist about Latisse and whether or not it is right for you.
Applying Latisse
For best results, Latisse should be applied nightly. Additional applications will not improve results and are not recommended.
The medication should be carefully applied after the face has been washed and all makeup has been removed. Contact lenses should also be removed prior to Latisse application.
Using the sterile applicator, apply Latisse along the lash line of the upper eyelid. DO NOT apply Latisse to the lower eyelashes. Avoid applying excess amounts of the medication and carefully blot away any excess solution, using a tissue or clean cloth. Use a new sterile applicator to apply solution to opposite eyelid to reduce the chances of transferring germs from one eyelid to another.
Expected Results of Latisse
With regular use, most patients achieve full results within 2 months of using Latisse. The medication is only effective with routine usage. Once Latisse is discontinued, eyelashes return to the way they were prior to treatment.
Possible Side Effects of Latisse
The most common side effect of Latisse is itching or redness of the eyes. Other side effects are less common but include:
- Skin darkening around the eye
- Eye irritation
- Dryness of the eyes
- Eyelid Redness
- Permanent darkening of the iris (colored part of the eye)
