What Causes Acne Breakouts?

Dirty or unclean skin does not cause acne, so there’s no need to harshly scrub your face. While various factors play a role in the development of acne, the primary culprit is a tiny blocked pore known as a microcomedone. Hormonal changes stimulate our oil glands, causing them to produce oil, or sebum, which becomes trapped in this clogged pore.

When bacteria mix with the sebum, it leads to inflammation, manifesting as red bumps, pus-filled spots, or cystic lesions. The intensity of acne can be affected by genetic predisposition and certain environmental influences. These can include medications, stress levels, and even dietary choices.

Acne Treatment Methods

A common initial treatment for acne involves the use of topical retinoids (such as Retin-A, tretinoin, or adapalene) to tackle clogged pores. These retinoids enhance cell turnover and improve skin texture and tone while providing anti-aging effects. Another frequently recommended part of acne treatment regimens is benzoyl peroxide, which is available in various formulations like cleansers and creams.

Benzoyl peroxide serves as an antibacterial agent, targeting the bacteria that contribute to acne development. Alongside retinoids and benzoyl peroxide, your dermatologist may include other medicated cleansers, topical antibiotics, or oral antibiotics in your treatment strategy. For more severe cases of scarring acne, isotretinoin (previously known as Accutane) is often considered a primary therapy.

For women dealing with “hormonal acne,” the addition of spironolactone can also be beneficial. With numerous treatment options available, it’s important to recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Consulting with a board-certified dermatologist will help you find the most effective acne treatment plan, tailored to your unique needs.

Using Isotretinoin (Accutane)

Accutane (isotretinoin) is a medication designed to treat severe acne or cases where other acne treatments have proven ineffective. It is a derivative of vitamin A that reduces oil production and alters the function of oil glands in the skin. Typically, this causes a long-lasting decrease in oil production, significantly lowering the chances of acne recurrence over time.

Accutane is highly effective but requires close supervision by your healthcare provider due to potential side effects, the most significant being the risk of birth defects. Women who are pregnant or attempting to conceive must not use this medication. In 2005, the FDA established an online monitoring program to prevent pregnancies in women taking Accutane, which includes mandatory monthly pregnancy tests.

Common side effects of Accutane include dry skin, chapped lips, dryness in the nose, and dry eyes. Staying well-hydrated, using moisturizers, and applying lip balm is essential during treatment. Additionally, patients on Accutane are particularly sensitive to sunlight, making sunscreen another crucial component.

While on Accutane, regular laboratory tests are necessary to monitor liver function and triglyceride levels, as the medication is metabolized by the liver. The frequency of these tests is determined by your healthcare provider. Monthly appointments are mandatory because Accutane can only be prescribed in 30-day increments, as required by the regulatory program.

Accutane is a potent medication that necessitates careful monitoring, and any side effects should be thoroughly discussed with your provider. It not only effectively treats and cures acne but can also significantly enhance a person’s appearance, thereby boosting their overall self-esteem.
