The board-certified dermatologists at Northstar Dermatology specialize in diagnosing and removing lipomas, also known as fatty tumors. Although classified as “tumors,” lipomas are benign and typically harmless. To have a lipoma evaluated by our experts, contact our office today.
Lipomas are benign (non-cancerous) fatty tissue growths that form beneath the skin. They typically appear as soft, movable nodules or bumps and can develop anywhere on the body. Generally, lipomas are slow-growing and harmless, but removal may be recommended if they become painful, bothersome, or large in size. In some cases, an imaging test like an MRI or CT scan may be needed to confirm the diagnosis before removal. Although the exact cause of lipomas remains unclear, certain individuals may be more prone to developing them than others.
Your provider at Northstar Dermatology develops an individualized treatment plan for your lipoma based on its location, size, and your symptoms. If your lipoma isn’t causing symptoms, they may recommend monitoring the growth.
However, if your lipoma is large, causes pain, or affects your appearance, the dermatologists at Northstar Dermatology perform a surgical excision to remove the benign tumor.
Your surgical excision is performed at the office under local anesthesia. If your lipoma is large, Northstar Dermatology may refer you to a surgeon for further evaluation.
