Skin tags are small overgrowths of skin that most commonly develop in areas where skin or clothing causes friction, like the underarms, neck, groin, or beneath the breasts. However, they can appear anywhere on the body, including delicate areas like the eyelids. Made up of skin fibers, nerve cells, and fat cells, skin tags resemble tiny flaps of tissue that protrude from the skin. They are typically harmless, asymptomatic, and benign in nature.
The most common treatment for smaller skin tags is cryotherapy, which involves using liquid nitrogen to “freeze” them off. After this treatment, skin tags typically fall off on their own, though some may require additional sessions with liquid nitrogen. Another common method is scissor removal, where our professionals use sterile surgical scissors to carefully clip the skin tag at its base. For larger skin tags, a numbing agent may be applied beforehand to ensure comfort. While skin tags can occasionally regrow, requiring retreatment, it’s important to note that their removal is generally not covered by insurance.
