Smooth Skin Ahead: Mole Removal Services in Keller

Many people tend to overlook their moles unless they’re in a visible or aesthetically disruptive area, such as the face. However, it’s crucial to monitor regular moles because these seemingly innocuous spots can potentially develop into a dangerous type of skin cancer known as melanoma. At our Keller Dermatology Clinic, the board-certified skin specialists perform comprehensive checks, carefully examining any moles that appear unusual. If you’re concerned about a mole or want it removed for cosmetic reasons, contact our office and schedule a consultation.

What are Moles?

Moles are clusters of melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) that appear as growths on the skin. They are very common, with most people having at least a few, and can range in color from your natural skin tone to shades of pink, blue, brown, or black. Moles usually begin to appear in childhood and can grow throughout adolescence. New moles developing in adulthood may be a potential sign of melanoma and should be assessed by a qualified dermatologist.

Melanoma Warning Signs

Routine skin exams with a board-certified dermatologist can help detect early signs of melanoma. You can also perform self-checks for melanoma by examining your moles using the following mnemonic:

  • Asymmetry: one half does not match the other.
  • Border: the edges are blurred, uneven, or scalloped.
  • Color: several hues and shades within a single mole
  • Diameter: a noticeable increase in size over time
  • Evolution: the mole looks different from others or has changed in size, shape, or color.

Schedule a skin cancer screening at Northstar Dermatology if a mole shows any of these characteristics or has symptoms like bleeding or discomfort.

What to Expect From a Biopsy
If a mole appears to have abnormal or potentially cancerous characteristics during an exam, a biopsy may be recommended. The area will be numbed, and a thin blade will be used to carefully shave off part of the mole for analysis at a pathology lab. A pathologist will then examine the tissue’s microscopic features to determine an exact diagnosis. If skin cancer is discovered, further excision or treatment may be suggested to ensure all cancerous cells are removed. Your skincare provider might recommend excision for other questionable moles, while some may be mild enough to simply monitor.

Dermatology experts are trained to evaluate mole characteristics using a specialized dermatoscope. To assess any new or changing moles, consult with the board-certified specialists at Northstar Dermatology.
