What Are Cysts?

An epidermal cyst, or epidermoid cyst, is essentially a “pocket” filled with skin cells and a soft yellow substance called keratin. These cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and usually develop as small lumps or nodules, although they can expand significantly over time.

When Should I Get A Cyst Removed?

The treatment or removal of cysts may be required if they become inflamed, infected, or painful. Additionally, you might consider removing a cyst if it has grown large enough to interfere with your daily activities or quality of life.

Cyst Treatment Methods
Treatment options for cysts vary based on their condition. In cases where cysts are infected or inflamed, they may be addressed with antibiotics, steroid injections, or a procedure known as incision and drainage. For epidermal cysts, surgical excision is a common approach. During this procedure, our board-certified dermatologists will first numb the area and then make an incision to carefully remove the entire cyst sac. It’s crucial to excise the outer layer of the cyst to minimize the risk of regrowth. After the procedure, the area will be sutured, and patients should expect some downtime. This can last a couple of weeks, and your doctor may prohibit lifting and other physical activities.
